Share the Martini – January 2015

Sharing the Martini in the 21st Century

Share The Martini - Pete Miller

I have always shared “The Martini”.  Growing up it was a new-fangled thing called the LP Record that my buddies and I would trade. We listened to a new crop of young artists, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Perry Como, Peggy Lee,  and Tony Bennett, just to name a few up and comers.

We all would also listen to DJ William B. Williams on the legendary WNEW-AM, 11-3-0 out of NYC.  Willie B., as he became known, gave Frank Sinatra the Chairman of The Board title, and would put Frank on the air every time he was in New York.  Soon every radio station in the country was playing Frank, Dean and Perry.

Even as early rock and roll became popular in the late 1950’s, another young, unknown singer, Johnny Mathis, produced an LP called Heavenly, which became the sound track of my generation. We would play his records and dance to his music over and over, every chance we had (and still do).

Fast forward to today, The Great American Songbook is making a comeback with recordings by old rocker Rod Stewart, Michael Buble, Diana Krall, Steve Tyrell and Renee Olstead. Even Lady Gaga, Joni Mitchell and Queen Latifa have brought back ‘our’ music with a new gusto that would make Frank and Dean proud.  Re-invented Tony Bennett is selling big hit records to our kids and grandkids.

Instead of a few dozen neighborhood friends, I now have over 5,000 social media followers worldwide.  We all have similar likes to be social media friends. Many are from my generation.

We Share the Martini in the 21st Century by posting links to our favorite music and music videos on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and many other social media websites.

The Martini In The Morning Chat Room has replaced the corner drugstore as one of our favorite hangouts. Brad plays a new song by an up and coming young artist.  Right away we download it from iTunes or from the artist’s own website.  Times have really changed.

The next time you are on Facebook, “Like” Martini In The Morning and become friends with Brad and Mother Miriam.  Then post to your friends that you are listening to MITM with Brad and MM. Encourage your friends to listen too.  Repeat this process a couple of times each day.

Yup, times have really changed, but the music “we love” is still there.  Just tell your friends where to find it on MartiniInTheMorning.com.
